The spiral staircase made me rethink my living arrangements

It was the spiral staircase that prompted Pender McCarter to reconsider his living situation in St. Louis.  “I’d lived in my 600-square-foot condo in Kirkwood for 35 years and loved the spiral staircase, but when I turned 75, I realized that I needed to rethink my living arrangements to age in place safely,” says McCarter, a retired public-relations executive. Last year, he relocated to a one-level, two-bedroom co-op in University City with a 24-hour front desk and access to in-home care services—ideal for an older adult seeking to maintain independence in St. Louis County.

Before making his decision, McCarter explored various options across St. Louis, St. Charles, Ballwin, and Chesterfield, including traditional retirement communities, cohousing communities, and life plan communities offering independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care within one development.

“In the end, I chose to age in place because I didn’t want to leave my vibrant Chesterfield neighborhood,” says McCarter. “I value being surrounded by people of all ages in a community that supports senior independence.”

Like many seniors in St. Louis, McCarter observed how senior living facilities in areas like Ballwin and St. Charles went on lockdown during the pandemic. This experience reinforced his desire to age in place, ensuring the freedom to make his own choices about socializing and accessing home care services in Missouri’s welcoming communities.
