Velux Skylight Health Checklist

Is your skylight performing at its best? Look for these 5 warning signs:

  • 1. Water Spots or Ceiling Discoloration

    • Check: Examine the drywall and ceiling area immediately surrounding the skylight frame.

    • The Sign: Yellowish staining, bubbling paint, or visible moisture often indicates a failure in the skylight flashing or a compromised roof seal.

    •

  • 2. Fog or Condensation Between Panes

    • Check: Look through the glass on a clear day.

    • The Sign: If you see "fogging" or droplets trapped inside the glass, the factory seal has likely broken. This reduces energy efficiency and can lead to internal mold.

  •

  • 3. Cracked or Brittle External Seals

    • Check: If you can safely see the exterior from a window or ladder, look at the rubber or silicone seals.

    • The Sign: St. Louis sun and ice cycles can cause seals to crack or peel. If the seals look "dry-rotted," water can seep behind the frame during the next heavy rain.

  •

  • 4. Drafts or Unexpected Temperature Changes

    • Check: Stand directly under the skylight during a cold or very hot day.

    • The Sign: Feeling a noticeable draft or excessive heat suggests the insulation around the curb has degraded or the unit is no longer providing a thermal barrier.

  •

  • 5. Operational Issues (For Venting Skylights)

    • Check: Open and close your manual or electric venting skylight.

    • The Sign: Grinding noises, sticking, or a failure to close completely can strain the motor and leave your home vulnerable to the elements.
